What is Seaside Treasures Hand-Dyed Floss?

Welcome! My name is Kirsten Frazier, and Seaside Treasures Hand-Dyed Floss is my fifth "baby", after my husband and three wonderful boys. I started dying floss as an adventure and as part of an internet exchange. When I realized that I had some really nice colors, and that I enjoyed doing this, I decided to see if I could make this "fly" as a home-based business. I talked with some designers and some friends who have on-line "Local Needlework Shops", and here we are!

Seaside Treasures is based in Lewiston, Maine, and I draw the inspiration for my colors from the varied surroundings all around me. I originally grouped the floss in "seasonal" collections, but as the line expanded, I've decided to simply list them all so that you, the stitcher, can pick and choose more easily. You can see all the colors on the Floss page.

Be sure to check out the newest finished stitches using Seaside Treasures on the Galleria page. I hope to be adding a collection of freebie patterns in the near future as well.

As always, if there is a color or color combination you don't see and would like, please feel free to contact me and I'll see what we can create!

How is Seaside Treasures Floss made?

I start off with DMC floss as my base, and I make the colors using various shades and concentrations of RIT dyes. Some of the original colors were made using food dyes, but I have converted them all to fabric dyes, hoping that will help with colorfastness. Each skein is rinsed by me until the water runs clear, and I try and heat set the colors as well, however, because it is overdyed floss, I cannot guarantee colorfastness. I highly recommend that you cold-water rinse the floss before using, if that is your habit, and that you take the usual precautions in working with hand-dyed materials.

Okay, now I've looked at the colors and I love them - how do I use them?

Well, you can use them in all sorts of different patterns for a different look. I have a conversion chart here that lists the closest DMC matches for Seaside Treasures colors, as well as some Gentle Arts Sampler Thread and Weeks Dye Works conversions. I will be adding to the latter two columns over the next few days, but wanted to at least get the DMC conversions up. I am working with several designers for patterns using the floss as well - AND there is one published pattern listed on the Patterns page, from a new designer, RTT Designs, with more coming soon. Don't forget to check out the "What's New" link on the front page to find out the newest information on Seaside Treasures! Most of all, be creative - switch colors where you think they'll work, and send me pictures of your finished pieces so I can add them to the Galleria! Thanks!

I'm sold!!! Where can I find these lovely flosses?

I encourage you to support your local needlework shops and on-line stores as much as possible, as they are the heart of this business. A listing of all shops currently carrying Seaside Treasures Floss can be found here, or you can order them directly from this site. Thanks again for all your support and encouragement, and keep up the wonderful stitching!
